Trigger pull question

Do you guys have a smooth trigger pull through the break or do you get a slight "hitch" or hesitation toward the end of the stroke? My XR9 has what I consider to be a hitch that interrupts the smooth…Continue

Ammunition separation--what is the cause?

Is the cause of the separation of (some) ammo due to the magazine lips "holding on to" the bullet as the tongs move rearward OR is it due to the speed of the cycling slide and the inertia of the…Continue

"After reading around these forums, I'm beginning to suspect that the +P Underwood ammo might have simply been too much pressure to guarantee reliable extraction.  Perhaps Bobergs could benefit from having a fluted chamber? Now, I'm…"

"No.  I can see nothing abnormal inside the gun.  And this malfunction was certainly nor clear-able by hand (at least not my hands)."

"Dave, does the lift plate still look the same?  If so, did the round seem normal when it fired?  Normally, (at least with the XR45) you have to rack the slide forcefully with a malfunction and it will clear."

XR9 action froze after firing last round

First Boberg malfunction after 1000+ of flawless function.  Trying to diagnose what happened and maybe see if I can regain some confidence in the pistol. The gun has been 100% reliable up to today.  I was testing out a new potential carry cartridge (Underwood +P) and wanted to make sure that it would run reliably in the gun. Loaded 2 magazines w/ 7 rounds and the first mag ran w/o a hitch.  The cartridge is definitely was snappier but it was manageable and I was impressed with how well I could…See More

Paul Koning replied to DaveR's discussion Ammunition separation--what is the cause?
"I did a bit of arithmetic. Judging by the 1000 fps video of the XR-9 firing, the slide's major movement happens in about 3 ms (three frames), and that's enough travel to start the ejection.  So, rather than measure stuff, I'm…"

Art Courville replied to DaveR's discussion Ammunition separation--what is the cause?
"Gouges on the bullets indictes that there is some resistance from the magazine lips.  However, I can easily scratch gouges into bullets in loaded cartridges without separating (or even moving) the bullets from the case.  It seems pretty…"

Mark Dante replied to DaveR's discussion Ammunition separation--what is the cause?
"yes. the marks on the projectiles are made by the magazine lips. you are absolutely right! but that does not change anything. bullet crimp strength varies and rounds with a weak crimp or no crimp at all may separate. while an inertial puller may…"

"If I may muddy the water a tad more, I've had issues with my 1911 when loading the same round(s) into the chamber repeatedly, the bullet gets compressed into the case; 200+p Gold Dot, 220 Critical Duty, 185 Critical Defense, 230 HST, etc. …"

Art Courville replied to DaveR's discussion Ammunition separation--what is the cause?
"Bryon - It's not the velocity it is the acceleration or _change_ in velocity. When the slide picks up the round from the magazine, it goes from not moving to moving very quickly, i.e., high acceleration. WIth the bullet puller, it is the same…"
