"Yep. That's why there is an entire thread dedicated to which factory loaded rounds work, and which ones fail. Also, I tried the same thing as you (crimping a factory round with a taper as well as with a roll crimp) and had them fail as well.…"

"Well, based on the SAAMI dimensions, the 357sig is 21.97mm nominal length and the 9mm is 19.15mm. The difference between the two is then 2.82mm which is 0.1110in."

"any idea how much to take off? My buddy can bring it to his job and have one of the machinists chuck it in a lathe and grind it down."

"You should be able to take the 357sig one and just grind off the base a little (should just be whatever the difference in height is between the 357sig and the 9mm). My shellplate happened to be about the right thickness if I just sat the round on…"

"So i asked lee if they would custom make a collet crimp die for 9mm and the answer was no."

Hobknob replied to Steven Roberts's discussion Reloading ammo XR9-S
"I don't really shoot much bare lead so I can't comment on how it holds with a light crimp. The modified 357sig (exact same bullet as a 9mm) crimp is just a collet crimp rather than a roll crimp or a taper crimp. You just can't buy a…"

"so how do the ammo manufacturers get such a good crimp?  Surely they aren't crimping the rounds with a modified 357 die."

"Do you have a similar solution for the 45acp round used in the xr45-s?"

"Ok, that's good news, at least it's an option for plinking rounds."

"You are both correct. Both the 9mm taper crimp and roll crimp dies only help, they don't eliminate the problem and you can still expect failures with every box you shoot. Using the collet crimp die (from the Lee 357sig FCD) you can crimp it…"

"So if you could put the ammo in a crimp collet as mentioned above it theoretically could work at reducing or eliminating pulling the bullet from the case when it's extracted from the magazine?"

"Blazer Brass, Speer Lawman and Federal Champion are all the same ammo with different labels.  The bullets are made from soft lead, tend to be pink in color.  I have a Lee sizing/crimping die and it seems to help only slightly - bullets…"

"With the exception of aluminum (and possibly steel) cased ammo, this kind of crimp should work for most other kinds of ammo. Note: it may not work very well on ammo that uses a machined solid copper bullet."

"Hi, I'm new here and I don't reload but I was wondering if it would be possible to re crimp live factory ammo? Since the issue is the crimp itself wouldn't putting a slightly tighter crimp work?"

"I've been meaning to reply to this thread for a while....but keep forgetting. I tried using the Lee 9mm Factory Crimp Die (taper crimp) as well as a roll crimp die and several different types of sealant/adhesive in an attempt to get a reliable…"
